What does the strength of Mobile phone signal depend on?

2023-07-17

As we move further away from the base station, the signal reception distance increases, and the signal of the mobile phone weakens. To receive high-quality signals, the mobile phone must increase its power. Similarly, if you want the base station to "receive signals", you need to increase the signal power sent out, which can also cause the phone to get stuck and affect the usage effect.

The electromagnetic wave propagates along the direction controlled by the antenna. When encountering obstacles that hinder the electromagnetic wave propagation, such as the metal shells of cars and trains, glass of buildings and other permeable obstacles, the Mobile phone signal signal will be attenuated. If it is located in a basement or elevator, with a small area or at the edge of an obstacle, the electromagnetic waves of the obstacle are difficult to penetrate or diffract, and the phone may have no signal at all.

The network we use daily is called Cellular Mobile Communication, which uses cellular wireless networking to divide a large area into many small areas, with a base station set up in each small area. Each base station is responsible for the communication and control of user terminals in the area, enabling users to communicate with each other during activities, and has the functions of cross region switching and automatic roaming across local networks. The coverage range of each area is mainly determined by the azimuth angle and downward inclination angle of the antenna.

It can be seen that the strength of Mobile phone signal is closely related to the terrain environment, network coverage requirements, baseband chip, base station transmission power, propagation obstacles, antenna installation mode and other actual conditions. The wireless transmission characteristics of base stations in different networks and communities vary due to their different wireless frequencies. In daily life, when we encounter a situation where our phone has no signal, it may be due to the limited service range of the base station, and the signal will gradually weaken as the distance increases. If you are just in the blind spot of base station service, the signal will be relatively weak.

The standard to measure the strength of Mobile phone signal is called RSRP (Reference Signal Receiving Power). The unit of the signal is dBm, ranging from -50dBm to -130dBm. A smaller absolute value indicates a stronger signal.
